太平洋(Pacific Ocean)是世界上最大、最深、边缘海和岛屿最多的大洋。它位于亚洲、大洋洲、南极洲和南北美洲之间。南北最长约15900千米，东西最宽约19000千米，总面积为18134.4万平方公里，平均深度3957米，最大深度11034米。 太平洋一词最早出现于16世纪20年代，由大航海家麦哲伦及其船队首先命名的。1519年9月20日，航海家麦哲伦率领270名水手组成的探险队从西班牙启航，西渡大西洋，他们顶着惊涛骇浪，吃尽了苦头，到达了南美洲的南端，进入了一个海峡。这个后来以麦哲伦命名的海峡更为险恶，到处是狂风巨浪和险礁暗滩。又经过38天的艰苦奋战，船队终于到达了麦哲伦海峡的西端，然而此时船队仅剩下三条船了，队员也损失了一半。 又经过3个月艰苦航行，船队从南美越过关岛，来到菲律宾群岛。这段航程再也没有遇到一次风浪，海面十分平静，原来船队已经进入赤道无风带。饱受了先前滔天巨浪之苦的船员高兴地说：“这真是个太平洋啊！”从此，人们把美洲、亚洲、大洋洲之间的这片大洋称为“太平洋”。
